New York, la ville qui ne dort jamais, on l'a vu et revu dans les séries, les blockbusters américains, détruite à cause de la fin du monde, attaquée par un Gorille, laissant l'opportunité à des âmes soeurs de se retrouver, ou bien sous le regard de Woody Allen, toujours magnifique, surprenante, captivante, ... Pourquoi New York ?
C’est un hasard. J’ai plus été attirée par l’expérience professionnelle que l’on me proposait que par la ville. Le fait que cette expérience se trouve à New York a été un plus puisque j’aime beaucoup cette ville.
Est-ce que tu peux détailler un peu l'organisme avec lequel tu es partie et les démarches que tu as dû effectuer ?
Alors là c’est l’arnaque. J’avais trouvé mon stage par moi-même et effectué toutes les formalités avec l’entreprise directement. Cependant, pour obtenir un visa J1 pour ce type de stage, il faut être reconnu comme « travailleur » américain, et pour être reconnu comme travailleur, il faut passer par un organisme privé (parenthèse) français rattaché au SEUL organisme (privé encore), chargé de ce type de contrat aux USA.
Et ce n’est pas fini, pour être pris en charge par Parenthèse Paris, il faut également faire appel à un organisme sponsor. Bref ! A celles ou ceux qui veulent effectuer un stage aux USA, je conseille de passer par un autre système ( jamais tout à fait légal mais beaucoup le font!). Une amie qui travaillait pour une grande marque de luxe était considérée et rémunérée comme “achat de fournitures” (tables, chaises, etc.) et donc là, pas besoin de formalité de visa aussi lourde (ouf).
Comment as-tu fait pour organiser ton voyage ?
L’organisme Parenthèse est très bien pour cela. Il se charge de toutes les formalités administratives. J’ai donc “seulement” dû compléter les millions de papiers, et dû répondre à quelques questions idiotes du style : “avez-vous déjà kidnappé des enfants?” “Appréciez-vous Ben Laden ?” Ha merde (...) il est mort !
Et pour le logement ?
Concernant le logement, j’avais trouvé un premier appart en sous location pour un mois grâce à un réseau de français à New York sur facebook. Une fois sur place, j’ai repris les recherches (cette fois-ci via “craiglist”) et j’ai trouvé un bel appartement. Pour être acceptée dans cette nouvelle colocation avec deux américaines, ce fut pire qu’un entretien d’embauche!

- Le Whyte hôtel à Brooklyn : y boire un pastis sur le toit un dimanche… - Un salon de coiffure entre sur la 10e entre avenue A et B : Essex and beauty - Sons of essex
Pour ces lieux "secrets" c'est assez cool d’y aller en semaine parce que le week-end, il y a beaucoup trop de monde (ce sont souvent des petits endroits, ça se remplit vite!).
- Le Sleep No More : Un nouveau concept de théâtre participatif. On vous donne des masques et on vous propulse à l’un des 4 étages de cet hôtel où vous pouvez suivre les acteurs et les histoires qui vous attirent. Seul conseil que l’on vous donne : suivez votre intuition! L’ambiance est indescriptible, c'est vraiment à faire !
- Le Boom Boom Room : site de la boîte "le bain"
- Acme : une boîte “secrète”
- Tout le quartier de West village : la base pour trouver les endroits où ont été tournés les séries et films connus comme Friends, Sex the City, Spiderman...

Il y a souvent des soirées sur les rooftop de ces hôtels et on peut y boire un verre ou danser toute la nuit.
NB : Il faut y aller de préférence le dimanche, l’ambiance est beaucoup plus cool.

- Tenjune : énorme pour l’ambiance rap US
Où manger
- Italian East village (sur la 7e entre avenue 1et 2), - Les camions de burritos de East village, - Bennys Burritos - Le mythique Shake Shack (y aller en semaine), - D’une manière générale, les restaurants indiens d’East village et tester les restaurants de Bleecker St.
Se promener
- Central Park : Biensûr! - Le quartier Alphabet City pour ses brunchs du Dimanche, ses graffitis, ses jardins. Et l’ambiance “village”.
On avait pris l’habitude mes colocs et moi d’aller boire un verre le dimanche soir sur le toit de notre immeuble en contemplant la skyline. Et non, je ne vivais pas dans un immeuble de milliardaires de l’upper east side ! Mais les immeubles de East village ont un toît avec une vue assez cool. Pour les meilleures vues, il faut vivre à Williamsburg ou South Manhattant et East Village !!!
Qu'est ce qu'il faut ramener de ce voyage ?
L’optimisme et la folie des américains, les gens que l’on a rencontré et qui sont devenus de véritables amis, des cookies de Insomnia Cookie, un écureuil (oui j'y avais sérieusement pensé).
Quels conseils pourrais-tu donner à quelqu'un qui souhaite partir à New York ?
Faire le trajet typique : Statue de la liberté - High Line - Time Square (et son quartier) - Top of the Rock - Central Park et Brooklyn. Même si c’est aussi bien mieux de découvrir tous les endroits “atypiques” et les folies de New York !
Quelque chose que tu aurais bien aimé savoir avant de partir ?
Attention pour les appartements, on ne signe souvent pas de bail avec les propriétaires ou la personne de la colocation qui détient le bail. À cause de cela, on a aucune légitimité en cas de problème : ça arrive souvent que les personnes ne récupère pas leur caution.
New York est la ville la plus sûre que j’ai connu !
Le climat est complètement fou (au mois de mai / juin même si vous sortez en tong-short-tshirt, il faut souvent prévoir un parapluie et une veste) un peu comme à San Francisco en fait, mais en pire.
Les gens sont très accueillants et rassurants.
La passion qu’ils ont pour les français. On me l’avait dit mais je n’imaginais pas à quel point ils nous aimaient!
Où est-ce que tu aimerais partir maintenant ?
Au Brésil... C’est un pays que je ne connais pas et qui m’intrigue. En voyageant, les personnes avec qui je me suis souvent très bien entendues, et qui sont restées des amis, sont des brésiliens. L’ambiance qu’ils décrivent quand ils parlent de leur pays à l’air géniale.
Le meilleur moment de l'année pour y aller ?
En hiver, pendant les fêtes de noël : quand il neige et que toute la ville est décorée.
Qu'est ce qu'il faut absolument goûter quand on est à New York ?
Les hamburgers, les brunchs, les nouvelles nourritures organiques dont les américains sont fous (attention il y a peu d’endroit où c’est vraiment bon), les sushis de Brooklyn !
La passion des voyages... c'est quoi pour toi ?
La passion des découvertes : des différentes cultures, lieux, mais surtout la passion de découvrir des personnes totalement différentes de nous. Des personnes qui ont une autre vision des choses.
Qu'est ce que tu retiens de ton expérience ?
De mon expérience professionnelle : leur optimisme, leur motivation.
Concernant les rencontres, les américains ne m’ont pas vraiment marqué. Ouf ! C’est dur à expliquer ça. Mais les gens ont beau être très avenants, sympathiques, etc. ça reste difficile, je trouve, de nouer de vrais liens.
Est-ce que tu es contente d’être partie là bas ? Tu voudrais y retourner ?
Oui bien sûr. Je ne suis pas sure de vouloir y retourner de peur de ne plus repartir ;)

New York gives the opportunity of soul mates to find each other, either under the look of Woody Allen, always magnificent, surprising, fascinating...

Why New York ?
It's a coincidence. At the beginning I was more attracted by the professional experience than the city. I love New York, so it was also a good point that the internship was there.
Can you detail a little bit how you find your internship and with what kind of organization you plan your journey?
So here is the swindle. I found my internship by myself and made all the formalities with the company directly. However, to obtain a visa J1 for this type of internship, you have to be recognized as American "worker", and to be recognized as worker, you have to take a french company (mind was parenthese) which is connected with the ONLY organization (still private), in charge of this type of contract in the USA.
And it's not over, to be considered by Parenthèse Paris, you have also to contact a sponsor. Anyway! For those who want to do an internship in the USA, I recommend you to try another system (never completely legal but a lot of people do it). A friend who worked for a big luxury brand was considered and paid "as purchase of furnitures" (like tables, chairs, etc.) and for this "statu" no need of heavy formality for the visa (phew).
How did you organize your journey?
The organization Parenthèse is great for it. It takes care of all the administrative formalities. So I "only " complete the millions of papers, and had to answer some stupid questions like: " have you already kidnapped a child? " or " Do you appreciate Ben Laden? " Oh shit (...) He died!
What about the flat?
About the flat, I first found an apartment in money rent for month with a French group in New York on Facebook. Once there, I took back the researches (this time via "craiglist ") and I found a beautiful flat. To be accepted in this new apartment with two Americans, it was worse than a job interview!

For these "secret" places it's better to go there during the week because during the weekend it's full of people (this kind of places are often tiny, so it's quickly full).
- The Sleep No More: A new concept of participative theater. We give you masks and we propel you to one of the 4 floors of this hotel where you can follow the actors and stories which attract you the most. The only advice that I can give you: follow your intuition! The atmosphere is indescribable, you have to do it!
- The Boom Boom Room
- Acme: A secret club
- All the district of West village: Where you'll find the places where were shot famous TV shows and movies as Friends, Sex the City, Spiderman...

There is often parties at this rooftops hotels, you can go there to have a drink or dance all the night.
NB: Go there on sunday, the atmosphere is better and cool.

- The famous Shake Shack (go there during the week)
- In general all the indians restaurants in the East Village. Try also the restaurants in Bleecker St.
To walk around
- Central Park: for sure!
- Alphabet City district to brunches on Sundays, its graffitis, its garden. And the atmosphere of the “village”.
With my roommates we use to go on our rooftop to have a drink on Sundays evenings and contemplating the skyline. And not, I did not live in billionaires' building of the upper east side! But the buildings of East village have a rooftop with a cool view. For the best sights it's cool to live in Williamsburg or South Manhattan and for sure East Village!!!
With what you should come back from this journey?
The optimism and the madness of the Americans, people I met and who became real friends, cookies of Insomnia Cookie, a squirrel (yes I had seriously thought about it).
What kind of tips could you give to someone who want to go to New York?
During your journey do the famous tour: Statu of liberty - High Line - Time Square (and around) - Top of the Rock - Central Park and Brooklyn. Even if it's also great to discover "atypical" and crazy places in New York!
Something you wish you knew before going there?
Be careful for the flats, usually you don't sign a contract with the owner or the roommate who own the contract. Because of this, you can't do anything if you have a problem. And ofter people don't get back there deposit.
New York City is the safest city I've ever knew!
The weather is completely crazy (in May/June even if you go out in tong - short - tee shirt, you should all the time have your umbrella with you and a jacket) It's a little bit like in San Francisco in fact, but worse.
People are really welcoming and reassuring.
They are also really passionated about French people. I knew it but I didn't think it'll be like this. They love us so much!
Where do you want to go know ?
To Brazil... It's a country that I do not know and I'm really interested about it. Since I'm travelling most of the time the people with who I get along and create strong friendship are Brazilians. When they talk about their country, I want to jump on a plane and see it by myself.
The best moment to go there?
Christmas time: when the city is decorated with all the lights, snow, christmas trees, ice skating and everything.
What people should try when they are in New York?
Burgers, brunches, organic food (Americans are crazy about it) and sushis un Brooklyn!
What is the passion of the journey for you?
Discover various cultures, places, but especially people totally different from me. People who have another vision of things.
What do you keep about your experience?
About my professional experience: their optimism and motivation.
About the people I met there, Americans don't let me a big memories. Ahhh it's hard to explain. But even if people are nice, pleasant, etc. It's still hard (It was for me) to create real relationship.
Are you happy about your experience? Do you want to go back?
Yes, sure. I'm afraid about one thing... If I go back there, I may don't want to come back.
